Make sure you wear appropriate clothing under your gown. Check with your school for clothing guidelines. Make your outfit elegant but simple at the same time. Remember you have to sit through a seemingly endless ceremony wearing that cap and gown so pick clothing you're not going to roast in (even if your ceremony is indoors).
If you have a light colored gown, wear light colored clothing. Girls, skip the red dress with that white gown! Don't ruin the prestigious look of your gown by having it appear as if you've been wrapped in tissue paper when your dark clothing shows through.
Your birthday suit does not count as clothing. Before you plan to bare it all to your classmates, try a test run in the mirror. Is that really the image you want to plant in your grandma's mind for the rest of her life? Unless you're built like a Greek statue, do everyone a favor and keep your clothes on during graduation!
Pay extra attention to your choice of footwear. It's likely your shoes are the only part of your clothing that people will be able to see so make your pair a good one. Flip-flops or muddy tennis shoes are probably not the best choice for this occasion.
Most etiquette experts would say your cap is not the place to construct a shrine to yourself or display your latest duct-tape art masterpiece. If you absolutely can't stand blending in to the crowd, at least make your expression of individuality tasteful and well planned. Err on the side of subtlety instead of outlandish. Subtle differences will still stand out in a crowd of uniformity; no need to construct a message on your cap that can be seen from space.
Graduation announcements are not the same as invitations. You aren't required to send a gift if you receive an announcement however it is a nice gesture to do so anyway. It is always a good idea to at least send a congratulatory card to the graduate.
To avoid any confusion, you can put "no gifts please" on your announcements if you don't want recipients to wonder if they should send one or not. This might avoid the perception that an announcement equals a request for gifts. If the person really wants to get you something, they typically will still send something regardless of what your announcement says.
When deciding who to invite to your ceremony, first determine how many guests are allowed to attend per graduate. Most institutions limit the number of tickets per person they hand out. You should send invitations first to your close family and friends. Pick the people who mean the most to you and who are going to actually show up. You don't want to waste a ticket on someone who ends up being a no-show!
Receiving a graduation invitation implies you should give the graduate a gift. If you attend the ceremony a gift is a must. If you can't be there, a gift is not mandatory but it's always nice to still recognize the graduate's accomplishments with a gift or at least a card.
If you have more people that want to attend the event than you have tickets, consider having a graduation party where everyone who wants to share in your celebration can get a chance to do so.
If you are invited to a graduation party and you attend, you should bring a gift. If you aren't attending, sending a gift is not mandatory but is still a nice gesture.
Send invitations at least a couple weeks before the ceremony or party. Announcements can be sent before the graduation or up to two weeks afterwards.
Formal invitations and announcements usually contain two envelopes. The outer envelope should be hand addressed in blue or black ink. Use titles and don't abbreviate anything in the address accept titles (Mr., Mrs., etc.). The inner envelope holds the invitation card/announcement and can be addressed informally (should be handwrittenMom & Dad, Uncle Bob, Nana, etc.). Place the inner envelope name side up in the outer envelope.
It's customary to give the graduate flowers after the ceremony or to give a corsage/boutonniere before the event.
Send Thank You notes to anyone who gives you a gift. Hand written is best. Personalize the note by mentioning the gift given and why you like it/how you will use it. Also thank anyone who attended any of your graduation celebrations with a note.
